Giving Up What Pleasures Us the Most Is A Good Idea

In the course of finding out what pleasures us we may find that there is one single pleasure that overwhelms our lives. You may call this an addiction or an obsession. It may be that you are pleasured by watching television, so you sit in front of the TV for four hours a day. Or it may be that you find immense pleasure in partying, so you party every day. The down side to engaging primarily in one pleasure is that you don’t give yourself a chance to experience other forms of pleasure. It also may be an indication that you are running away from yourself – that your primary form of pleasure is a way to keep you from getting in touch with yourself. You may also know that this pleasure is in some way bad for you because it is keeping you from fully engaging in life.
It may be a good idea to eliminate this pleasure from your life to see what happens. But how do you get rid of the one thing that makes you happy? It’s called will power. I used to think I didn’t have any will power because I gave up right away on incorporating or eliminating something from my life. I used to think that other people had way more will power than I. But then I read an article that argued the point that we all have the same amount of will power but that we use up that will power when we try to apply it to many different things. In other words, if I want to give up drinking, run 5 miles a day, and want to reduce the amount of TV I watch dramatically, I am setting myself up for failure. Spreading your will power over many things, will reduce your chances of sticking to what you want. The solution is to focus on one thing at at time. If you want to give up smoking, for example, you should make this the only thing you are exerting will power over for a while. You should not make yourself do anything else, or exert your will power over anything else, during this time.
Scholars also argue that you need to exercise your will power in the same you would exercise a muscle in your body. The more you restrain yourself from doing what you want, the stronger you will feel in exerting will power. It may sound counterintuitive to give up a pleasure when engaging in pleasure therapy, but it makes sense if there is one pleasure that is predominant in your life. You may need to give up this one pleasure in order to experience other pleasures. And, you may need to give up this one pleasure in order to stop running away from yourself and to really get in touch with your wants, needs, and desires.
So, try it. Give up your one major compulsive or addictive pleasure to see where that takes you!
